Proposed ICE Detention Facility in McCook
Sparks Public Outcry Across Nebraska
A proposal to convert a facility in McCook into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center has ignited widespread concern and impassioned testimony at a recent public hearing, which drew an overflow crowd and voices from across the state.
Among the speakers was a retired educator who expressed his opposition to the plan, referencing his spouse’s involvement in a grassroots advocacy group known informally as the “Pissed Off Grandmas.”
He criticized the political motivations behind the proposal and voiced concern about its impact on Nebraska’s identity. “I don’t want a ‘Cornhusker Clink’ to stand alongside our ‘Good Life’ and ‘Home of Arbor Day’ signs on the highway,” he said. “If this facility is approved, it should be named ‘Pillen’s Prison’ - a nod to the individual pushing for its establishment in our state.”
The Pissed Off Grandmas and Like-Minded Friends, were a visible and celebrated presence at the hearing. Our advocacy efforts were widely recognized, with many attendees approaching us before and after the event to express appreciation for our work. Following the hearing, the grandmas held a spirited performance outside.
